6 ways to help you focus on what really matters in life.

The great Socrates once exclaimed “An unexamined life is not worth living”. Life needs to be lived to its fullest potential. It isn’t uncommon for many of us at some point in our lives to wonder what life is all about and question what truly matters in life. An ideal way to live life is to utilize your time, energy, and resources in the best possible way. Here are 6 questions that will help you find your answers.

1) Who Am I Becoming? – As always the best way to start anything is with yourself. Ask yourself who you are. But remember you are not your religion, your race, your job, your marriage. You are is also not your past, present or future. You have to look deeper into yourself. Are you truly happy with the person that you are? Would you like to change any aspects of your life so that you see better results? Are you in control of life, or has life taken control of you? Write down your top 3 priorities in life on a piece of paper.

2) What am I grateful for? – We often find ourselves in a race to make more money, achieve more , find new relationships, change the way our bodies look and while we do all of this we often forget to be present in this moment called NOW. We take for granted all that we have. We forget to be grateful for what we have. In all of my years of mentoring and working with several of my clients, one thing I advocate the most is for everyone to practice gratitude. It is very simple, just sit down each day and make a list of 5 things that you are grateful for. The more grateful you are, the more of it you will get. That is how the law of attraction works. 3) Is my lifestyle one that promotes physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing? – Your lifestyle is a major influencer of your success, health and wellbeing. Wellbeing has two dimensions - the physical and the spiritual and we need to take care of both. There is a deep connection between the body, the mind and the soul and when any of these are not at their best we just can’t live our lives properly. Good nutrition and exercise takes care of the body while prayer, meditation, yoga, chanting takes care of the mind and soul. It is important to live healthy as life is not only about accumulating wealth. It is also about being physically well and able to enjoy it.

4) Do I spend enough time with the people that matter to me? -Try and assess the amount of time you spend with family and friends. Are you doing it just because you are forced to? Do you consciously try and enjoy every moment spent with them? Are you too busy for the people who actually care about you? Remember that family is one aspect of life that has a level of permanence only next to yourself, other things may come and go but family always remains. Having a connected circle of friends and family is very good for your long term happiness.

5) Am I clinging on to hate and refusing to forgive people or situations in my life? - Are there situations in my past that are causing me to lose peace? Have I still not forgiven that colleague or friend who was bad to me? Every one of us encounters unpleasant events. But we need to forgive ourselves if we have wronged others and forgive others if they have wronged us in these situations. Forgiveness and letting go will bring you the much desired inner peace. 6) Is there too much clutter in my life? – We accumulate so many material things in our lives over a period of time. Ask yourself if you really need all of them. Clothes, furniture, books, DVDs whatever is not being used for more than 2 years does not deserve to take space around you. Give it to someone who may need it. Similarly, get rid of emotional clutter. Do away with ill feelings that do no good to you in any way. Let go of fear, sadness, anxiety and stress and welcome love, peace, joy and abundance.

Take control of your life, live in the present and enjoy every bit of it while you do.
