Within us we all have our inner critic who can work for our good but also work against us.
Even if you don’t realise it we all do at least some amount of self-talk every day. You may
not notice it but it does happen. When most of what we are saying to ourselves is negative
we invite upon ourselves untold damage and misery.
You must take the appropriate steps to halt this negative self-talk. I have listed below a few
suggestions that will help you rid yourself of this.
1) Say stop to the inner voice: Whenever you realise that your inner critic comes alive
and is unnecessarily being negative, speak to it using phrases like “Stop, we do not
need to go down that road again” or “Let’s us make it work this time”. Gently
command your inner voice to think positive. Disrupt the flow of your negative
thoughts at the beginning itself and don’t let it grow louder.
2) Remind yourself of the times that the inner voice has not worked for you: As soon
as hear your inner voice speak negatively, remind yourself of all the times that
you’ve listened to it and have failed. Think of how you may remain same unhappy
person 5 years down the road if you indefinitely continue listening to the negative
self-talking inner voice.
3) Replace negativity with positivity: Every time you begin to self-talk negatively,
identify and if you believe it is a call to action thought that is valid self criticism then
act on it but if you believe it is useless negativity decide and then switch. Identify,
Decide, Switch! It’s that simple. Switch the negative thought and substitute it with a
positive one. It is not just enough to let go off the negative thought, but it is equally
important that you immediately replace the negative with positive.
4) Follow a healthy lifestyle: It is often said that our gut is our second brain. Science
has confirmed that through the Vegas nerve there is a very close connection
between our gut and our brain. Trust me, eating healthy and exercising will eliminate
negative thoughts from your life by 50%. Try and get 30 minutes of exercise of any
form each day. Fuel your mind and body by practicing techniques like meditation
and yoga.
5) Surround yourself with positive people: Birds of the same feathers flock together is
an old clichéd phrase. But it is true to this day. The problem of hanging out with
complainers, pessimists, haters makes you a complainer, pessimist and a hater.
When faced with having to be around such people you should exercise any of these
two options. Either try and sow seeds of positivity in them or walk away and find
positive people. Generally I would not try to change the world and so would walk
away and find new and energising positive friends to hang around with. You have
two safe choices, you could try either one and the results will be fantastic.
