5 Ways to embrace fear and move past it

A lot of us live our lives by being fearful of so many different things. It may be psychological or emotional fear and there are several kinds of them:

  • Fear of the unknown
  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • Fear of loss
  • Fear of being rejected
Fear often shows up abruptly and unannounced. There is very little that we can do to stop fear from coming immediately, but there is lots we can do once we are faced with it. Fear makes us feel small, defeated and often puts us in places we do not want to be. Let us find ways that can help us conquer our fears and live in places that make us feel blessed, energetic and successful.

1) Acknowledge your fear: Whenever you start feeling afraid, just stop whatever it is that you are doing and observe your fear. Acknowledge that you are feeling fearful. Try and reflect on things around your fear. What causes you the most fear in that particular situation? Is it a person, is it a thing, is it an outcome you are afraid of? Acknowledging fear will help put you in a position to control it.

2) Manage your fear: Once you are done with acknowledging your fear, the next step is to manage it. Start by asking yourself what if. Let’s say you have stage fright while playing the guitar. Ask yourself what’s the worst that could happen. Would you forget the chords, would your hands be trembling and visible to the audience, are you afraid that the audience will boo you, would your guitar string break half the way through your song? Remind yourself that most of these things have not happened and are only in your mind. Shift your focus on the exact opposite of all the things you thought about and imagine how you’d feel if none of what you feared happened. That’s where you want to be and that will keep you going.

3) Use the act of mindfulness: Feelings of fear usually occur when our mind is thinking of the negative outcomes of the past or fear of possible negativity in the future. Under fear the mind is not in the present moment, which is actually a moment where everything is well for you. Shift your focus to the present and watch the fear disappear. Make it a conscious effort to be mindful of the things you are presently doing and your fears will diminish.

4) Use your fear: Whenever you are faced with fear, picture fear to be an object, look it in the eye and say things like “Fear, I see you, I feel you.. But I am going to manage you and use you for my good”. You will instantly feel confident and will channelize your fear as a guide to win over the situation that you are fearful about.

5) Focus on the feeling of accomplishing the fearful tasks: Shift your focus on how you’d feel if you won over your fears and achieved a task. Let’s go back to the same example of fear of performing on a stage. Picture yourself finishing your act and getting a standing ovation from the audience. How would that make you feel? Now bask in those feelings for a while and draw motivation from it and you will see your fears disappear into thin air.
