Practical Ways to Reduce and Calm Your Anxiety

Norman Vincent Peale so aptly said that there is only one place in the world where there is no anxiety or stress and that place is 6 feet below ground in the cemetery! All of us face anxious moments during some time or the other. Our bodies are geared up to face stress. The problem is our bodies cannot cope with it when it gets chronic! For some stress and the resultant anxiety is a chronic disorder that they are battling every single day. The victim’s legs begin to shiver, hands tremble, the mouth dries up, palms begin to sweat and so on. Various events can trigger these symptoms. Below are simple hacks that will help you battle anxiety.

1) Breathe: Find a quiet place and sit down. Close your eyes and take several deep breaths with long releases. Focus on your breath continuously for 2 minutes. Watch as the process calms your body down immediately.

2) Right knowledge: Find ways to gather the right information. Research about what makes you nervous. Research the ways to better yourself and overcome cause of the anxious moments faced. If possible find people who can help to talk to.

3) Quick workout: Do some body weight training or lift weights until you break a sweat for about half an hour. This releases the tension and makes the body and mind stronger. You could also go for a run or a swim or cycling.

4) Distract your mind: Try and focus on something else as soon as you feel anxious. Try and distract your mind immediately. You could watch a little bit of TV or listen to upbeat music. Do not let the negative thoughts linger, replace them with something positive.

5) Eat healthy: Your anxiety will drain your body; hence it is important to have healthy food during these times. Leafy vegetables, nutritious fruits and dry fruits are great for your body. Do not skip meals.

6) Ask your worries a set of questions: Ask yourself how often have I made a big deal of a small situation. Am I still affected by the negative things that happened to me a few weeks back? Then remind yourself that this too shall pass.

7) Experience the feeling: Let the negative feeling enter in. You need to experience it to let it go. Running away from it will make it come to you in all directions. So experience it and heal yourself by letting it go out.

8) Be in the present: As much as possible try and stay in the present moment do not let your mind wander in the past or to the future. If you drift away concentrate on your breath or that what is before you for 2 minutes. Take courage and face your fears. Your anxiety is not permanent. You can fight it whenever you want; everything is in your hands.
