Ways to Cope with Anxiety During the Coronavirus

These uncertain times have been very tough for most. Fear of contracting the virus, or losing a loved one or losing a job can have a severe toll on our mental health. There has been a tremendous rise in depression and anxiety cases after the start of Covid-19. Such mental pressure is bad for our health and we must defend ourselves against it. What can you do to help yourself?

1) Be kind to yourself: I know that you are going through a lot. Financial risks, health worries, loneliness are now a part of our everyday lives. Given the situation the worst you could do which would hurt you even further would be talking negatively about your life. Remember you are not alone, there are several millions going through the same thing. You need to stay strong and positive. This too will pass. There has never been a storm that hasn’t had its strength dissipate with time. It is however critical that you keep you biggest asset (your body) physically fit!.

2) Exercise: A healthy body contributes to a healthy mind. I am aware that you might not be able to hit the gym, however make use of your home for your workout. Do body weight training and a little bit of cardio. Yoga and meditation will help you relax as well. Just log into YouTube and you will have several videos that will help you with the right methods. Make exercise a regular part of your daily routine.

3) Stay connected with others: Don’t self-isolate. Physically connecting with people may be out of the question. But make sure you connect with them via call or communication tools like WhatsApp, Zoom and Skype. We are social beings. Sharing how you feel with others will make you happier and less stressed. You are human and cannot live in hiding for long. You must connect.

4) Spend some time in nature: Spending time with nature can be quite soothing. Make sure you step outdoors in your garden. Get some fresh air and feel the connect with nature. If you have space outside your house get into the practise of gardening. It will help you feel grounded and stress free.

5) Eat healthy: A pandemic is the time in which we need to take care of our bodies and build our immunity. Make sure to eat on time each day and eat home cooked nutritious foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Also stay well hydrated. Avoid junk and processed foods. Limit your intake of alcohol.

Make sure you are living healthy during these times. There is nothing more important than staying in and taking care of yourself while the virus slowly disappears. Stay positive, believe in yourself and remember we got to win this over.
